Dog Diarrhea: What to Do at Home and When to See the Vet

Why dogs get diarrhea

Diarrhea is not a diagnosis — it is a signal from the gut, and the causes range from trivial to emergency. The most common ones are food-related: switching kibble too quickly, eating table scraps or fatty treats, or scavenging something off the ground on a walk. In summer this gets worse, because food and treats spoil faster and bacteria build up in a water bowl left standing outside, so this is a distinctly seasonal complaint.

Other frequent causes include intestinal parasites (giardia, roundworms, hookworms, coccidia, whipworms), viral infections such as parvovirus and distemper — especially dangerous in puppies who have not finished their vaccine series — stress from moving, boarding, grooming or unfamiliar surroundings, medication side effects, and internal disease such as pancreatitis or inflammatory bowel disease. In other words, a mild upset stomach and a genuine emergency can look like the same symptom. That is why what matters most is not the diarrhea itself but the other signs that come with it.

Small intestinal vs. large intestinal diarrhea

How the stool comes out gives a rough hint about which part of the gut is involved. It is not a diagnosis, but it is genuinely useful information to give your vet.

• Small intestinal — large volumes of watery stool at a time. The number of trips outside goes up only modestly, and if it drags on you may see weight loss or vomiting alongside it.
• Large intestinal — small amounts, very often, frequently with clear mucus or fresh red blood mixed in. Dogs often strain, and may keep posturing even after nothing more comes out.

When you go in, bring a photo of the stool, or a fresh sample sealed in a bag if it is only a few hours old — it can go straight to a parasite or bacterial test and speeds the whole visit up.

What the color hints at

Color narrows down the possibilities — it is a hint, not a diagnosis. Still, it is worth knowing which colors sit closer to the danger end.

• Yellow or mustard — often means food moved through fast enough that bile came along with it. A bland white diet such as chicken and rice can also make stool look yellow. Usually not urgent, but worth checking if it keeps happening.
• Green — can follow grass eating, or unusually fast transit through the gut.
• Fresh red blood mixed in — usually bleeding from the colon or the anal area. A single small streak in a dog who is otherwise fine may be watched, but repeated bloody, watery diarrhea should be treated as an emergency.
• Black, tarry, sticky stool — can be digested blood from the stomach or small intestine, such as from an ulcer or a swallowed object. Don't brush this off even if your dog looks fine on the outside.
• Grey, greasy, foul-smelling stool — may mean fat is not being digested and absorbed properly, which can point to the pancreas or digestive function and deserves testing.
• White specks or thread-like bits — possible parasites. Take a sample with you to the clinic.

Go straight to the vet if you see any of these

• Blood in the stool, or black tarry stool
• Diarrhea together with vomiting, or an inability to keep water down
• Lethargy, poor response when called, or pain when you touch the belly
• Pale or tacky gums, or skin at the scruff that doesn't spring back when pinched (a dehydration sign)
• Any chance your dog ate something toxic — chocolate, grapes, onion, xylitol — or swallowed an object
• Puppies who haven't finished their vaccines, senior dogs, or dogs with existing conditions — dehydration and low blood sugar come on much faster
• Diarrhea lasting beyond 24 to 48 hours, or coming and going over several days

If your dog seems otherwise fine, here's what to do at home

If your dog is bright, their gums look normal, and they're drinking, start by letting the gut rest. For an adult dog, some veterinarians suggest withholding food for about 6 to 12 hours — but puppies, senior dogs and small breeds can become hypoglycemic and dehydrated quickly, so don't fast them on your own; call your vet first. Throughout, offer water in small amounts frequently rather than a big bowl at once. When you start feeding again, use a bland, low-fat meal — boiled chicken breast (no skin, bones or seasoning) with plain white rice — in small portions spread through the day. Once stools firm up, increase the proportion of the regular food gradually over three to five days. Mild diarrhea usually resolves within two to three days. Never give human anti-diarrheal or stomach medication on your own: some human ingredients cause serious side effects in dogs, and if the underlying cause is an infection or a foreign body, slowing the gut down can make things worse.

Habits that cut down on summer diarrhea

In hot weather, portion kibble into airtight containers, refrigerate opened wet food and don't keep it long. Wash the water bowl daily and change the water at least twice a day. Scavenging on walks is one of the most common causes of summer diarrhea, so "leave it" training — or a basket muzzle for determined scavengers — is worth the effort.
