Both dogs and cats generally need about 40โ60ml per kg of body weight per day. Pets on wet food drink less water because the food is over 70% moisture, which is normal.
Drinking more than about 100ml per kg per day consistently (excessive thirst) can signal kidney disease, diabetes, or Cushing's. In cats especially, a sudden increase in drinking warrants a checkup. On the other end, cats that barely drink are prone to bladder issues โ encourage water with fountains or wet food.
