Heatstroke in Dogs: Symptoms and First Aid

The bottom line first: relentless panting, heavy drooling, and bright red gums are heatstroke warning signs — start cooling your dog on the spot, and head to the vet while you keep cooling.

Dogs handle heat far worse than we do

Dogs can't sweat all over their bodies the way humans do. They release heat mainly through panting, plus a little sweating through their paw pads. That's why a midsummer walk, a hot car, or a poorly ventilated room can send their body temperature soaring in minutes. A dog's normal body temperature is roughly 38–39°C (100.5–102.5°F), and once it climbs past about 41°C (106°F), they enter the danger zone where organ damage can begin. Heatstroke progresses fast and can be life-threatening, so knowing the warning signs ahead of time matters more than anything.

Suspect heatstroke if you see these signs

Early signs — panting that is heavier than usual and won't stop, excessive drooling, gums and tongue turning bright red, slowing down and acting sluggish.
Progressing signs — vomiting or diarrhea, stumbling, seeming disoriented, gums that feel sticky or look an abnormal color.
Critical signs — seizures, loss of consciousness, collapse. At this stage, every minute counts.

Flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus, as well as overweight dogs, senior dogs, and dogs with heart or respiratory conditions, get into trouble much faster in the same heat — so be extra cautious with them.

First aid: "Cool first, transport second"

The current veterinary guidance (based on Royal Veterinary College research) is "cool first, transport second" — cooling comes before the car ride. Here's the order to follow.

1. Move your dog to shade or indoors immediately — get away from the source of heat first.
2. Pour water cooler than your dog's body over them — soak them thoroughly, focusing on the back of the neck, belly, armpits, groin, and paws. Young, healthy dogs can also be immersed in cool water for faster cooling.
3. Add airflow — a fan, air conditioning, or even hand fanning helps heat escape as the water evaporates.
4. Don't drape wet towels over them — a towel left on the body traps heat. Continuously pouring water works far better.
5. Head to the vet while you keep cooling — if your dog is conscious, small sips of water are fine, but never force them to drink.

Prevention is the best medicine

In midsummer, shift walks to early morning or after sunset, and press the back of your hand to the asphalt for five seconds — if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for their paws. Never leave a dog alone in a car, even with the windows cracked. Keep fresh water available at all times. Can I cool my dog down with ice water or ice packs?

Current veterinary guidance says young, healthy dogs can be cooled quickly by pouring plenty of cool water over them or immersing them in it. For senior dogs or dogs with underlying conditions, pouring water while fanning them is the safer approach. Avoid draping wet towels over the body — they trap heat instead of releasing it.

My dog seems fine after resting in the shade. Do we still need the vet?

Even if your dog looks recovered, heatstroke can cause organ damage or blood clotting problems that appear hours later. If your dog showed any suspected heatstroke symptoms, cool them down and then have them examined by a veterinarian.
