Why this exists

You have probably read the feeding table on the back of a bag of dog food โ€” one line per weight bracket. The problem is that two dogs of the same 5 kg can need energy amounts that differ by more than 30% depending on neuter status, age and how much they move. Feed a neutered indoor dog the same as an intact, active one and one of them gets fat while the other goes short.

"Dog years ร— 7" has the same problem. It ignores the fact that small and large breeds age at completely different rates. A large dog is already entering its senior years at six or seven, while the ร—7 rule puts it in its early forties.

These rough numbers are the ones owners meet every day. Mongnyang Lab exists to recalculate them for your specific animal. No sign-up, no app, no payment.

What the calculators are based on

Every calculator states the formula behind it. None of the numbers are invented.

The food portion calculator uses the RER/DER approach standard in veterinary nutrition. Resting energy requirement is calculated as RER = 70 ร— body weight (kg)0.75, then multiplied by factors for neuter status, life stage and activity level to give daily energy requirement. That figure is converted into grams using the calorie density of your actual food โ€” which is why the calculator asks for it. The same energy target means a different number of grams for every product.

The age calculator uses size-banded conversion tables for small, medium and large breeds, reflecting the steep growth of the first year or two, the flatter middle years, and the earlier onset of old age in larger dogs.

The chocolate toxicity calculator works from theobromine dose per kilogram of body weight. Theobromine concentration varies by tens of times between chocolate types, so dark, milk and white are entered separately.

The vaccination calculators follow the intervals of standard vaccination programmes. Protocols vary between clinics, so treat the dates as a planning aid and follow your own veterinarian's schedule.

The toxic food checkers draw on foods with documented toxicity in dogs and cats, distinguishing those dangerous in tiny amounts โ€” grapes, xylitol โ€” from those that only matter in quantity.

Who writes this

The site is run by one person who lives with pets. Not a veterinarian. It seems right to say that before anything else.

What we do instead: formulas come from veterinary nutrition and clinical references, and if a number cannot be traced to a source, it does not become a calculator. Health information is cross-checked against multiple sources, and where those sources disagree, we say so rather than picking the tidier answer. Not dressing up uncertainty as certainty is the only real asset a site like this has.

We do not diagnose or prescribe. Even in articles about symptoms, our job ends at "this is when to see a vet" โ€” the rest belongs to a veterinarian.
