A cat reaches about 15 human years at age 1 and 24 by age 2. After that, add roughly 4 human years for each cat year. For example, a 5-year-old cat is about 24 + 4ร3 = 36 in human years. Indoor cats often live 15+ years.
From around age 11 (about 60 human years), cats are considered senior. Kidney disease and hyperthyroidism become more common, so a checkup with bloodwork once or twice a year is recommended.
Unlike dogs, cats don't vary much in lifespan by breed or size, so the same chart applies to all cats.
A vet can estimate age from teeth, eyes, and coat. Ask during your next checkup.
