The amount on the bag is just an average. Recalculate for your dog.

Vets calculate the Resting Energy Requirement as RER = 70 ร body weight (kg) raised to the 0.75 power, then multiply by a factor based on age and spay/neuter status (DER). Dividing that energy by the food's calorie density gives the daily portion in grams.
The calculated value is a starting point. Check weight and rib coverage (body condition score) every two weeks and adjust in 10% steps. On days you give treats, reduce food by the treat calories โ treats should stay under 10% of daily energy.
Bag guidelines often assume an active, intact adult dog, so they can be too high. For spayed/neutered indoor dogs, the calculated value is usually closer to reality.
Look for the 'metabolizable energy (ME)' on the back of the bag, usually 330โ400 kcal per 100g. If listed per kg, divide by 10.
